(a).
Note on latest editions of charts 1459, 3279, and
3280 of the harbour:- "the soundings are reduced to Low Water
of an exceptionally Low Spring Tide, or 19 feet 2 inches below
the copper bolt at the North-best corner of one of the store-
-houses in the Royal Naval Yard".
(b).
Note on former editions of the same:- "The Sound-
-ings are reduced to Low Water of an exceptionally Low Spring
Tide, equivalent to 2 feet 4 inches on the Royal Naval Yard
Tide Pole."
(c). Note on verious charts, such as 3429, of areas
outside of the harbour:- "Soundings in fathoms reduced to 18
feet 2 inches below the copper boit on North-West corner of
building in Royal Naval Yard, Hongkong".
(a). -Note on the brass plate attached to the Copper
Bolt above referred to :- "This Copper Bolt is 17 feet 10 inches
above the level of the soundings taken by His Majesty's Survey-
-ing Vessel "Rifleman" in 1886, along the foreshore of Bong-
-kong (Victoria) Harbour".
(e). Memorandum dated 18th. December, 1901, from the
Hydrographer to the Commanding Officer, H.M.S."Waterwitch":-
"For any further surveys of Hongkong Waters a datur level should
be taken of:- 3' 0" on the Dockyard Gauge, or 1' 8" on the
Kaulung Cbservatory Gauge, or 18' 6" below the Copper Bolt.
This is very nearly the same as the datum established by the
"Riflemen" in 1666".
(f). Note on Commander D'Arcy's chart of hungbom Bay
showing survey made in January, 1905:- "The soundings are re-
-duced to Low Water ordinary Spring Tides, equivalent to 11' 0"
